Winemaker Notes

Blackened purple/crimson. Low altitude of aroma. Soft and elegant exhibition of black raspberry and grilled meat, blue berry muffin, dark milk chocolate, liquorice, coffee, choc cake, incense, cinnamon, freshly baked Christmas cake, iodine, graphite and crushed rock. Relatively closed nose in contrast to mouth filling flavours, although continually evolving in the glass. Overall, a vividly intense concentration of characters although it remains trapped in the tannin. An atypical Astralis that is slightly more savory profiled than recent '03 and '05. Cascades of flavor roll along the most refined and sublime expression of Syrah in the cellar. Varietal characters driven by ripe, precisely focused tannin structure that fills your mouth with thousands of finely grained particles- from the moment after consuming: the flavors glide from one to another and the texture remains.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2006 Astralis has stunning nose redolent of warm blackberries, meat, toast and charcoal, infused with notes of smoked duck, anise and a slight bit of peat. Though still very youthful, this big, rich, and powerful full-bodied wine has firm yet velvety tannins, a vibrant acid line and is very long on the finish. Drink it now to 2026+.

A big wine, but amazingly supple, graceful and pure, offering cascades of wild blueberry, black cherry and plum fruit that play against spices such as cardamom, clove and black pepper. It's all seamlessly integrated with fine tannins and enough creamy oak to complete the picture. Syrah. Drink now through 2020.

A cooler year with good composure. The aromas of coffee cream and sweet, fragrant spices are evident immediately, with blueberry and sweet earthiness that is reminiscent of fresh black truffle. The palate has a very plush, rich blackberry and dark-plum fruit core. Super ripe, glossy and layered. Some savory cocoa powder here, too. So drinkable and plush with open-knit tannins. Drink over the next eight years.

Clarendon Hills Winery Video

Clarendon Hills is a small family-run winery based in Clarendon, South Australia. The company was founded by biochemist, Roman Bratasiuk, in 1990. The story of Clarendon Hills is one of passion, dedication and commitment to exception wine. It all began when this biochemist and wine lover decided to produce his own wine. Though he'd never trained as a winemaker, Roman let himself be guided by his refined palate and scientific knowledge. Following his favorite producers and preferred styles, Roman sought to make a version of the wines he loved.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

Known for opulent red wines with intense power and concentration, McLaren Vale is home to perhaps the most “classic” style of Australian Shiraz. Vinified on its own or in Rhône Blends, these hot-climate wines are deeply colored and high in extract with signature hints of dark chocolate and licorice. Cabernet Sauvignon is also produced in a similar style.

Whites, often made from Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc tend to be opulent and full of tropical, stone and citrus fruit.
