Winemaker's Notes

The Chateau de Beaucastel Hommage Jacques Perrin opens to a gorgeous nose with red fruits (blackberries, redcurrants), figs, black pepper and spices. The mouth is round and lush with a lot of flesh and intensity, backed by a great graphite spine. It displays aromas of blue fruits, porcini mushrooms, black truffles and mourvedre meaty components. The wine is long and round with intense tannins that are already soft but will hold the wine for the next 20-30 years.

Critical Acclaim

"Only made in top vintages and a blend of roughly 60% (or more) Mourvedre and the rest a mix of other permitted varieties, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a cellar selection that always comes from the same plot of vines. A massive, powerful wine, with serious amounts of extract and concentration, it slowly gives up gamey, complex (and heavenly) notes of blueberry, blackberry, blood, licorice, garrigue and smoke. This flows to a full-bodied, layered and brilliantly textured effort that conceals its tannic spine with tons of fruit. It should start to hit its prime at about age 10 and have two to three decades of longevity."
98 Points

"Saturated ruby. Heady, expansive aromas of black and blue fruit liqueur, potpourri and incense, with smoky Indian spices emerging with air. Juicy, strikingly intense blackberry and blueberry flavors are complicated by notes of minerals and candied violet, with a subtle peppery quality adding bite. Velvety tannins give shape to the extremely long, spicy, penetrating finish, with the floral note echoing. This stunning, palate-staining wine gets my vote as the best Chateauneuf of its vintage."

In 1903, a young chemical engineer and mathematics professor named Pierre Perrin,...

Learn About Chateauneuf-du-Pape

(shah-too-NUHF due Pahp) Southern Rhone's landmark region, Chateauneuf du Pape, was the first region to gain AC status in France. That was the 1920s - it's history goes much further back than that. As the name suggests, the wine region was named after the new papal home, referring to the period of time in the 1300's when the pope resided in Avignon instead of Rome. Notable Facts...

Learn About Rhone Red Blends

The Rhone region of France has a delightful selection of red varieties. There are 22 grapes allowed in the Rhone AOC, about half of them red. Most of these varieties are used as secondary blending partners, often comprising less than 10% of the blend. The primary red players of Rhone blends are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Most wines from the Southern Rhone use Grenache as their...
