Warm and rich, the wine from vineyards on the slopes above Cadillac have the structure of the vintage along with the ripe, blackberry fruits. It is already attractive to drink, and will continue to age nicely over the medium term.

From a gravel and clay site near Cadillac, this blend of merlot (60 percent) with cabernets sauvignon and franc is delicate and sophisticated, with a pretty line of strawberry-scented fruit. Fresh and zesty, it will add some lift to braised rabbits.

Chateau Suau, France
Chateau Suau Winery Video

Château Suau is a remarkable vineyard whose origin dates back to the 16th century. Former hunting lodge of the Duke of Epernon owes its name to Messire de Suau who owned it in 1687. The castle, reworked in the 17th century by the Suau family which will give it its present appearance, becomes the property of a Bordeaux wine merchant at the end of the 18th century.

The chateau has been owned by the Bonnet family since 1986. Under Monique Bonnet's leadership, Chateau Suau has undergone an organic conversion and is today one of the few wineries in the region to be certified organic. Alejandro Bulgheroni became the majority shareholder in 2014, while Monique Bonnet, and her American husband Tom Kenney, continue to run the day-to day. Consulting vigneron, Michel Rolland and his team bring their expertise to the vineyard and the cellar.

Cotes de Bordeaux is located in the hillsides of Bordeaux, along the right banks of the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers. The Chateau Suau estate vineyard consists of 66 hectares in the Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux appellation and is certified organic by Ecocert.

In most of France, wines are named by their place of origin and not by the type of grape (with the exception of Alsace). Just like a red Burgundy is by law, always made of Pinot noir, a red Bordeaux is a blended wine composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Depending on the laws of the village from which the grapes come, the conditions of the vintage and decisions of the winemaker, the blend can be further supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and in rare cases, Carmenere. So popular and repeated has this mix of grape varieties become worldwide, that the term, Bordeaux Blend, refers to a wine blended in this style, regardless of origin.
