Winemaker's Notes

The first tastings showed 2003 Smith Haut Lafitte to have good concentration and superb balance with low, but sufficient acidity. It also has an expressive bouquet combining peach, apricot, grapefruit, white flower, and vanilla aromas.

Critical Acclaim

"Apple, honey and lemon character. Full-bodied, with ripe fruit and an aftertaste of lemon rind, spice and honey. Needs some time to open. Excellent. Best after 2007. 5,000 cases made. "
93 Points

"Medium yellow. More exotic, musky aromas of stone fruits and resiny oak. Fat, ripe, sweet and rich; can't match the young 2004 for flavor definition, but this is impressively full-bodied and opulent, almost viscous, in the style of the vintage. A low-acid, high-alcohol version of white Graves , with a chewy, minerally finish. I'd drink think in the medium term, as the alcohol may overwhelm the fruit seven or eight years from now."

Learn About Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Map ItMap It

Thanks to its 55 hectares of superb gravelly vineyards, Smith Haut Lafitte is often referred to as the archetypical Graves. The estate's history goes back to the Crusades, and a Scottish navigator, George Smith, who became the owner of the estate in the 18th century. He was followed by M. Duffour-Dubergier, Mayor of Bordeaux, and then Louis Eschenauer, a famous wine...

Learn About Pessac-Leognan

(PEH-sak lay-ohn-yawn) One of the top appellations within Graves, Pessac-Leognan is home to the only Graves chateau listed as a first growth in the 1855 Medoc classification - Chateau Haut-Brion. In fact, praise for the chateau dates back to the days of Thomas Jefferson, when, upon visiting the chateau in 1787, he bought 125 bottles for his cellar in Virginia. Notable Facts The...

Learn About Bordeaux White Blends

Bordeaux White Blend
There's white wine in Bordeaux, too! Typically made from Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and bits of Muscadelle, white Bordeaux can be a fully dry table wine or, as in Sauternes, a deliciously sweet dessert wine. In other areas of the world, a Bordeaux blend consists primarily of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, either of which may be the predominant variety. Bordeaux blends can vary in style, but most have good acidity and often a mineral overtone.
