    Winemaker Notes

Bordeaux is full of secrets that the natives like to keep to themselves. But some secrets are harder to keep than others. It's common knowledge that the Entre-Deux-Mers, Bordeaux's expansive, alluvial farm belt framed by two great rivers stretching far south and east of the city, is largely incapable of producing top quality wine grapes. Rather, this is an area well known for average wines at entry prices. What's far less known is that Entre-Deux-Mers has a sweet spot. It does. The terroir in the extreme northwest, near where the two rivers form one estuary that ultimately runs to the sea, is very, very good. This is where the town of Sauveterre de Guyenne is located and where Roc de Leveraut , a small, family owned estate has been growing Cabernet Sauvigon and Merlot for three generations. Current wine maestro Rene Ballarin, grandson of the founder makes highly agreeable, modern Bordeaux that expresses notable richness at a modest price

This estate has been in the Ballarin family since 1932 and today Rémi Ballarin represents the third generation to be in charge. The vineyard is about 50 km away from Bordeaux centre and about 100 km away from the Atlantic Ocean. The excellence of this location and its soil is underlined by the fact that it has been planted with vines for several centuries.

In most of France, wines are named by their place of origin and not by the type of grape (with the exception of Alsace). Just like a red Burgundy is by law, always made of Pinot noir, a red Bordeaux is a blended wine composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Depending on the laws of the village from which the grapes come, the conditions of the vintage and decisions of the winemaker, the blend can be further supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and in rare cases, Carmenere. So popular and repeated has this mix of grape varieties become worldwide, that the term, Bordeaux Blend, refers to a wine blended in this style, regardless of origin.
