Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 13.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

An expression of its terroir, the wine is deep violet red in color with balanced tannins and early approachability. Aromas of dark berries and raspberries are confirmed on the full succulent palate. These are offset by slight grilled notes and nuances of licorice.

Critical Acclaim

"Forward, with a juicy blackberry and cherry profile, backed by toast and licorice notes. There's a big blast of fruitcake on the nice grippy finish. Drink now through 2010. 6,000 cases imported."

Ch. Mont Redon CDR is a really good wine for the price. One of my favorites after we visited the winery last year. I purchased a case and will buy another one.

Established in 1344, Chateau Mt. Redon is one of the oldest wine-producing estates in France and the largest single property in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The vineyards are planted in the 13 grape varieties of the region and are covered with large, smooth stones which reflect the sun warmth by day and residual heat by night into the maturing grapes.

Learn About Rhone Red Blends

The Rhone region of France has a delightful selection of red varieties. There are 22 grapes allowed in the Rhone AOC, about half of them red. Most of these varieties are used as secondary blending partners, often comprising less than 10% of the blend. The primary red players of Rhone blends are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Most wines from the Southern Rhone use Grenache as their...
