    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

This vineyard is only planted with red grape varieties: 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The appellation is Bordeaux and the estate lies between Fronsac and Bourg. The color is bight red with a fresh nose dominated by red berries. On the palate, the wine is very elegant with a nice balance and a good finish. Flavors of red fruits and some delicious notes of roasted coffee are present.

    Chateau Grand Village, France
The illustrious and famed Bordeaux negociant firm of Jean Pierre Moueix was founded by Jean Pierre Moueix in 1937 and now owns and holds exclusive rights to sell and manage some of the greatest vineyards on the right bank of Bordeaux. The Moueix family and their long-time winemaker, Jean Claude Berrouet, have defined a style of winemaking distinguished by integrity and total devotion to the expression of each individual vineyard.

The Chateau Grand Village estate is owned by Jacques Guinaudaeau, owner and winemaker of the illustrious and very rare Chateau Lafleur Pomerol. The estate is managed in the same way as Lafleur using classic "jardinage" technique: crop thinning, hand harvesting, table sorting, small batch fermentations preceded by a gentle cold soak and micro vinifications.

In most of France, wines are named by their place of origin and not by the type of grape (with the exception of Alsace). Just like a red Burgundy is by law, always made of Pinot noir, a red Bordeaux is a blended wine composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Depending on the laws of the village from which the grapes come, the conditions of the vintage and decisions of the winemaker, the blend can be further supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and in rare cases, Carmenere. So popular and repeated has this mix of grape varieties become worldwide, that the term, Bordeaux Blend, refers to a wine blended in this style, regardless of origin.
