Winemaker's Notes

72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc

The Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2004 presents a beautiful ruby red color. The nose is very dense and ripe, it offers a combination of blackberry and "pain grille" with added hints of spices. On the palate, this wine shows its harmonious structure. The tannins are well-balanced. This vintage has already started to express its personality but it will need few more years to show all its potential and developing as it does ever more complex flavours to give increasing pleasure.

Critical Acclaim

"Subtle aromas of currant, berries and vanilla follow through to a full-bodied palate, with silky tannins and a long finish. Builds on the finish. Serious for the vintage. Best after 2010. 9,165 cases made. –JS "
91 Points

"This excellent offering displays sweet black currant notes intermixed with notions of licorice, scorched earth, and spicy herbs. Medium-bodied and elegant with abundant fruit on the attack and mid-palate, and light to moderate tannin, it should drink well for 10-15 years."
89 Points

"Medium-deep red. Ripe aromas of plum, leather, chocolate and mellow nutty oak; can't match the 2005 or 2006 for lift. Then supple, sweet and accessible, with ripe but cooler flavors framed by harmonious acidity. Not a particularly powerful or structured wine but the tannins are suave and the finish offers good smoky persistence. This has turned out nicely."

Learn About Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste Map ItMap It

The history of Grand-Puy-Lacoste is fascinating in many ways. It is a family saga going back to the 16th century. The name Grand-Puy, already mentioned in documents from the Middle Ages, comes from the ancient term "puy" which means "hillock, small height". True to its name, the vineyard sits on outcrops with a terroir similar to that of the Médoc's first growths. Since the 16th century the property was passed down from generation to generation, until the current family, the Borie's, bought the property in the 1920s.
