Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Garnet in color. An intense nose marked by ripe fruit and good wood. Very dense, with a wide and harmonious structure with notes of cherry and plum which are combined with well-integrated oak. Still young tannins accompany a long fruity finish. Blended from a selection of the best lots, it's a generous wine, round and harmonious. Traditional barrel aging enhances the silky structure and elegant aromas.

This starts out smooth and rounded and then begins to develop a drier, firmer character. Putting the flattering richness and the structure together and the wine is both rich and solid, with black currant fruits vying with a dry core. It still needs time; drink from 2017. Editors' Choice

Chateau des Annereaux, France
Chateau des Annereaux Winery Image
The history of the chateau is long and rich; it starts with the arrival of a family of pioneers, the "Annereau" in the fourteenth century. Since that time, the family runs the land of their ancestors from generation to generation, until today without discontinuity. Many events, happy or unhappy, wrote this fascinating family saga. Since 2004 the chateau is owned and managed by Mr. & Mrs. Hessel taking the path of organic farming in 2007.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

On the northern border of the acclaimed Pomerol region, Lalande de Pomerol is an incredible source of impressive Merlot-based wines, but at a fraction of the price compared to its southern neighbor. The region has the potential to offer the same concentration of the finest in Pomerol, but typically not without a touch of appealing rusticity.
