Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The most sought-after wine in our portfolio, this limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon represents the pinnacle of Chappellet winemaking, and embodies the elegant power and complexity of Pritchard Hill winegrowing. Like the great Bordeaux wines that first inspired Donn Chappellet, this wine is crafted by blending Cabernet Sauvignon with other classic Bordeaux varietals. The wine was aged for 20 months in 100 percent new French oak, and for an additional eight months in bottle prior to release.

This exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon is a testament to the mountain terroir of Pritchard Hill and the exacting viticultural methods applied to its cultivation. Our 2008 Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon was blended from a selection of the finest grapes from our most storied vineyard blocks. The result is a rich and multifaceted wine offering ripe fruit aromas of blackberry, dark cherry and cola that flow from the glass. Dark chocolate and espresso notes add depth and definition to the fruit, while spicy oak aromas of cinnamon, clove and brown sugar contribute lively top notes to the wine's charming personality. The palate is rich and mouthcoating, with lingering sweet berry supported by hints of cedar and anise, which add an intriguing counterpoint to the fleshy texture. The tannins are seamlessly integrated, making this a wine with excellent aging potential.

Critical Acclaim

"Tough-edged, earthy and leathery, though deeply concentrated and muscular. Built around a core of dense dark berry fruit, mineral, cedar and graphite, this is not the early-allure charmer it's been in recent years. Best from 2013 through 2022. 2,309 cases made."

Dark Red, very rich, supple, plush and layered cab, has amazing flavor, with tiers of black currant, black cherry, mineral, sage, chocolate. Very full-bodied, and well-structured, with chewy tannins and a long, lingering finish. Still needs time, even after decanting for 2 hours. This is one that will definitely improve with age.

Learn About Napa Valley

It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard...

Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
