Winemaker Notes

Our 2007 Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon was blended using the most exceptional fruit from our finest vineyard blocks. As a result, it is both complex and complete, displaying all of the elements that have come to define great Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon. The color is deep, dark and saturated, seeming to stain the glass, while the aromas offer lovely violet notes that mingle with elements of sweet blackberry, anise, and espresso. On the palate, this wine immediately reveals sweet berry and chocolate flavors that morph into a liqueur-like veneer. Smooth, layered tannins and an excellent structure leave a silky impression through-out the long, satisfying finish. This wine is no aperitif; to enjoy its fullest expression, its substantial character and flavor deserve to be paired with roasted or grilled meats, or with rich cheeses.

77% Cabernet Sauvignon; 12% Petit Verdot; 8% Malbec; 3% Other. Leaping out of the glass with its intensely fruity, keenly focused, layered aromas of black currants, hints of blackberries and creme caramel all tightly wrapped up in youthful vivacity that screams "aging potential", this deep and dramatic effort delivers an equally full measure of generous yet barely evolved flavor on the palate. Its full and supple yet somewhat fleshy palatefeel is may invite early drinking, but its underlying structure insures that it will improve for years to come.

The medium to deep garnet colored 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, 8% Malbec, 2% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Wow—it has an incredibly evocative nose of Black Forest cake, redcurrant jelly, cassis, dried roses, blackberry pie and lavender with fragrant wafts of tilled soil, licorice and incense. The medium to full-bodied palate is completely packed with rich, opulent fruit framed by firm, super ripe, grainy tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing with epic length.

Sleek, rich, intense and beautifully balanced, with a complex mix of black currant and black cherry, plus red and black licorice. Firm, focused, expansive and layered, ending with classic Bordeaux-like cedar, tobacco and cigar box notes. Drink now through 2020.

This is a monster Cabernet, in the best sense. Comprised of all five Bordeaux varieties, it’s bone dry, enormously complex and firmly masculine, with very big, hard tannins. Concentration on the flavors shows layers of blackberries, black currants, blueberries, mocha, violets, sweet charred oak and a firm grounding of minerals. An outstanding wine from the Pritchard Hill region east of the Silverado Trail, but one that needs cellar time to resolve the tannins. Better after 2013, and should develop for many years after that.

Chappellet Winery Watch Chappellet's Amazing Story Winery Video
For more than four decades, the Chappellet family has been crafting world-class wines from fruit cultivated on the steep, rocky slopes of Napa Valley's renowned Pritchard Hill. As one of the first wineries to pioneer high-elevation hillside planting, and one of the few remaining great family-owned Napa Valley wineries, Chappellet Vineyard and Winery has influenced generations of vintners. Throughout its history, Chappellet has also established an enduring legacy as one of California's most acclaimed producers of Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Chappellets' romance with Pritchard Hill began when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed the mountain's spectacular vistas in the late 1960s. Inspired by the notion that Bacchus loves the hills, Donn and Molly followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. There, on the mountain’s serene and picturesque hillsides, the Chappellets established their home and winery, raising their children and cultivating the vineyards.

Since being founded by Donn and Molly in 1967, Chappellet has earned acclaim championing the robust power and complexity of wines crafted from mountain grapes. At the same time, Chappellet has helped to establish Pritchard Hill as one of California’s most revered winegrowing sites. To honor the mountain's rich, expressive character, the winemaking team focuses on creating extraordinary, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignons that embody the intensity and finesse of fruit from Pritchard Hill.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
