Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2007 Estate Red marks the culmination of thirty years of site-specific research with the goal of creating a single red wine that evokes the unique character of the Chalk Hill Estate. We have matched our diverse terrain, soils and mesoclimates to specific Bordeaux varieties, clones and rootstocks. The Estate Red combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Carmenère. Grown on rocky hillsides with sunny aspects, our red vineyards are thinned to low yields and canopies are diligently maintained to ensure the clusters reach optimum maturity. We are dedicated to managing tannins in the vineyard and patiently wait for flavor development as single vineyard blocks are micro-managed and frequently divided into multiple harvests to achieve desired ripeness. Winemaking practices are geared toward extracting the softest tannins from the skins and promoting fruit expression, with a combination of tank and barrel fermentations. Aged in French oak barrels for 20 months, this wine is a compilation of 42 small lots, each treated individually until the initial blending at 10 months barrel age. Aromas are varied and complex, featuring warm black raspberries, crème de cassis, violets, roasted herbs, and pipe tobacco. The palate delivers concentrated red fruits, dried cranberries and black plum leading to a more savory element of sage and black pepper. Textured yet silky, the wine finishes long and is enjoyable upon release, but will also age beautifully for the next 15+ years.

Blend 51% cabernet sauvignon; 24% malbec; 13% merlot; 11% petit verdot; 1% carmenère

Critical Acclaim

"Perhaps the finest Estate Red to date is the 2007. Its dense ruby/purple hue is followed by blackberry, cassis, cedar, and licorice characteristics, supple tannins, a more accessible personality, full body, and admirable purity, texture, and length. Drink this beauty over the next 2-3 decades. "

"Made in the modern style, this Cabernet-based Bordeaux-style blend was aged in mostly new French oak for 20 months, so it shows plenty of toasty, oaky notes. It's softly delicious, with tiers of raspberry, cherry, red currant, milk chocolate, violet and dried herb flavors. wrapped into the smoothest possible tannins. An extrodinarily beautiful wine for drinking now and the next 4-5 years."
95 Points

"Bold, rich, graceful and full-bodied, offering a wonderful beam of ripe blackberry, currant and wild berry, with touches of spice and tobacco leaf. Full-bodied, firming on the finish, where the flavors gain depth and maintain persistence. Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Carmenere. Drink now through 2017."

Even with my new rule to avoid half bottles, this Chalk Hill was superb in every way. My wife asked for me every night until it was gone.

I honestly had no idea what to expect, as the wine was in a small bottle, and was made of Boreaux grapes. This wine was fantastic. It was the best wine I have had in years. I was amazed. The color was a beautiful dark garnet, with this blue/purple hue. The nose was incredible, showing lavendar, anise, currants, and dark fruits. the flavor followed, with rich, intense fruit, rich in blackcherry, currants, a touch of anise, and mild oakiness. Unfortunately, because it was in a smaller bottle, I did not believe it would have the capacity for aging well. I just loved this wine.

Wow. This wine is beautiful! Dark fruit, plush tannins, that sweetish edge that I really enjoy in a fine Cab. I wish I had bought more.

It's good juice but, I was expecting more. Honestly, expectation of this great vintage was unrealized with this bottling.

Pours dark, much like a Paso Zin or an Australian Syrah. Very big and jammy at first but after at least an hour in the glass it became more complex. Not a typical Napa Cab, but was the first bottle opened in a lot of 6 bottles.

Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about a half the amount of wine as her northeasterly neighbor. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the...
