Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

"Caymus Vineyards Special Selection is a reference point for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. According to Chuck Wagner, the patriarch of Caymus Vineyards, it is a blend of the best Cabernet lots in a given year. Until the 2008 vintage, Caymus Vineyard SS had been 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, but Chuck is now adding a small percentage of Merlot to soften the wine and make it a little more approachable when young. I tasted the three most recent vintages of Caymus Vineyards SS and I found them all opulent and almost exotic in character. The 2008 was the most exciting with an intense and powerful finish of wild fruits and velvety tannins."

"Bright, full medium ruby. Black raspberry, bitter chocolate and licorice on the nose. Lush, sweet, concentrated and mouthfilling; not nearly as porty as the basic cabernet, with seamless dark fruit flavors showing more energy and depth than the regular bottling. The finish is smoothly tannic, chocolatey and very long. Like a liquid confection, even at this early stage: this really saturates the mouth. This is so sexy now that it's hard not to wonder whether the wine's potential flavor complexity has been compromised by its uncanny early sweetness. But it certainly has the stuffing to age.

Full in body, fleshy in feel, viscous to the max on the palate, this wine is no shrinking violet, and while there will be those who find it somewhat over the top, it will be welcomed as a first-rate success by those who like a little heft in their wines. Color, this wine has a seductive ruby red color. Nose, this is really a fruit bomb, very powerful. There a LOT of black fruits going on here. Blackberry, black licorice, wild berry, toasty oak, some heat coming through, spices and there is a hint of vanilla from the oak. Midpalate, there is a heat component here, big and bold, full bodied, fills the mouth, toasty oak is still vibrant here (but not over the top). Finish, this wine has a pleasant long finish, smooth firm tannins, seductive sexy layers of black fruits dancing on my palate, black licorice, vanilla from the oak is still vibrant. This is indeed a classic california napa valley cab. Bottled at 15.4%. It is very well made and balanced. Even though it is still a baby now, it is still approachable. This wine shows that it has potential. It will easily age for 13 to 17 years. Good job, Caymus! This is a wine that you would pare with semi firm cheese and very good quality steaks. I am 93+ on this effort. You must seek it out. Happy drinking!
Opened Christmas Eve. Powerful and complex on the tongue. Tight, layered, muscular. Nose is thin and disappointing for a Caymus. Needs more time in the cave.

WOW. I finally caved in and opened this bottle since I don't trust my temperamental wine fridge and the recent summer storm power outages over the long haul. No special occasion, just a girl and her fascinatingly intense bottle of wine enjoying the wonders of air conditioning during a record breaking heat wave on a July afternoon. There are so many dark smoky flavors that I don't even know where to start. It tastes even better if you are patient enough to let it decant for a bit. My only regret is not buying more than one bottle so I could break it out again on a more celebratory occasion.
Intense best describes this Caymus Special. Fruit on the nose is plum and dark cherry plus.. Just fills the room, so nice. Drinking this you have such a big intense flavor with no hard edges. Great mouth feel and the strong finish lingers. Definitely a candidate for aging but supple enough to drink now. That's why I bought two.
I bought this wine a few weeks ago with the intention of laying it down for a few years. Shortly after buying it, I was solicited for a review by Wine.com to do my own review. Come on guys... give it a little time to rest in my wine cellar.

As the Wagner family celebrated the 40th anniversary of Caymus Vineyards in 2012, they thought back to 1972 which Charlie Wagner, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner and their son, Chuck, built their winery among the vines planted on the family's ranch in Rutherford, California - the center of the Napa Valley.
