Winemaker's Notes

Opaque, dark black-cherry color. Deep, generous aromas of black currants (cassis) and black cherries that promise sweet, mature fruit, interwoven with notes of anise, black licorice and vanilla. The wine enters the mouth with an explosive impression of richly ripe fruit, especially black currants and plums. This pure fruit essence forms a solid core that dominates the wine in its evolution in the mouth. Flavors of licorice and toasted spice as well as textural elements from the finely grained tannins and plush, fleshy mouthfeel envelop this core but never overcome it. The fruit flavors deepen and expand as the wine builds to a prolonged, weighty finish.

Critical Acclaim

"Dark, rich and intense, a vibrant, deeply concentrated and firmly tannic style. Young and tight, this wine packs in lots of rich, chocolaty plum, black currant, cherry, anise and sage and herbal flavors. Really revs up the flavors on the finish, with unfolding layers of complexity and depth."
95 Points

"The dense ruby/purple-colored 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection reveals an overlay of sweet, toasty new oak intermixed with blackberries, currants, and vanilla with hints of tar, chocolate, and espresso. This big, sweet, juicy Cabernet is not the most complex effort. It is overt, flamboyant, and consumer-friendly."

As the Wagner family celebrated the 40th anniversary of Caymus Vineyards in 2012, they thought back to 1972 which Charlie Wagner, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner and their son, Chuck, built their winery among the vines planted on the family's ranch in Rutherford, California - the center of the Napa Valley. In 1975, the Wagners produced their first Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, which remains the only wine to have twice been named Wine Spectator's "Wine of the Year" (1984 and 1990 vintage).

Learn About Napa Valley

It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard...

Learn About Cabernet Sauvignon

(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
