As the Wagner family celebrated the 40th anniversary of Caymus Vineyards in 2012, they thought back to 1972 which Charlie Wagner, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner and their son, Chuck, built their winery among the vines planted on the family's ranch in Rutherford, California - the center of the Napa Valley. In 1975, the Wagners produced their first Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, which remains the only wine to have twice been named Wine Spectator's "Wine of the Year" (1984 and 1990 vintage). It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard lands were scooped up and vines were planted throughout the county. A number of wineries emerged, from large conglomerates to small boutiques to cult classics. Cabernet Sauvignon is definitely the grape of choice here, with many winemakers also focusing on Bordeaux Blends. Whites are usually Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Notable FactsWithin the Napa Valley lie smaller sub-AVAs that lend even more character specifics to the wines. Furthest south is Carneros, followed by Yountville, Oakville & Rutherford. Above those two is St.-Helena and finally, just grated an AVA, Calistoga. These areas are situated on the valley floor and are known for creating rich, smooth Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. There are a few mountain regions as well, nestled on the slopes overlooking the valley AVAs. Those include Howell Mountain, Stags Leap and Mount Veeder. Wines from the mountain regions are often more structured and firm, benefiting from more time in the bottle to evolve and soften.

The most famous of the California wine regions is Napa Valley, and these wines are certainly outstanding – but it's not as broad and diverse as its larger neighbor, Sonoma County. Down south, Santa Barbara's Santa Maria Valley is well-known for its Rhône blends, as well as cool-climate varieties like Pinot and Chardonnay. The Central Coast, the largest California AVA, has many different microclimates that lead to a wide range of wines with many sub-AVAs.

So, so rich and so ripe, this is a red wine for those love powerful and satiny Cabernets. Made from one of Napa Valley's top vintages, the wine actually drinks pretty well now, if served with grilled ribeye of beef. Pleasingly rounded in the aftertaste.The Mad Uke - Chicago, IL37/15/2014

Anyone openly gushing over this wine, I really don't understand your fervor. Without question - this liquid needs years in the bottle. Don't touch until 2017 at the earliest. My real problem here how this vintage has been relentlessly promoted...the whole 40th Anniversary hype. Allegedly it's a very special wine, a gift to the world, yet it hit the market at a discount, and cases of it have flooded the market floors. Even places that rarely feature Caymus have it openly displayed. As a Somm in a Detroit steakhouse recently told me, "Something's not quite right here." After cracking a bottle, suspicions were confirmed. Too good to be true. Aging is seriously required here, and with fingers crossed. The offering is thin. There is barely any nose. There is minimal depth. As we speak, Caymus-40 is a $20 wine cloaked in $80 trumpeting. It might be a beauty someday, but not now. Let's talk in 2017.Bill Epi - Darien, CT38/20/2014

I’m a die-hard Caymus lover and have been collecting and drinking both the Caymus Napa and Special Selection for some 27 years. I've had the opportunity to taste the 2012 Caymus Napa cabernet on several occasions and am seriously unimpressed. I've summarized my reactions with the following points: 1) No one who knows Caymus could ever state the 2012 Napa cabernet is in any way “classic” or “typical.” Really now! This wine tastes like no Caymus I’ve ever experienced. 2) While smooth, I find it much lighter than usual in body, shallow in complexity and seriously lacking tannin. 3) The drinking experience is unsophisticated at best --- lacking in body, complexity and depth of character. As such, I can't imagine how age will improve this wine. 4) One prominent taste I get from this wine is a strong flavor of VANILLA !! 5) In my educated Caymus opinion, the 2012 Napa cabernet is a disappointment, made more apparent given it's from a vintage considered otherwise strong across Napa. It’s no wonder ---- they increased quantity and decreased price for this wine --- that might say it all. 6) I can't find any professional reviews as of date of this note, and I can't say I'm surprised. As we all know, when the big wine critics are unimpressed with a particular vintage of an otherwise favorite wine, they tend to conveniently skip reviewing the offending vintage. While I’m eager to read their reactions --- their silence is deafening. In summary, I consider this a Caymus to be avoided.
