Style: Smooth & Supple

Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 13.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The Chianti Classico Riserva has a ruby-red hue with a trace of garnet. The nose is elegant, displaying hints of spice and fruit. This a well-structured wine with smooth tannins and a long finish.

Critical Acclaim

"The sweet black cherry, blackberry and spice flavors highlight this powerful, polished red. The fruit, earth and spice notes prevail as the tannic grip emerges on the finish."
92 Points

"Dried fruits with hints of pepper and dark chocolate on the nose. Full and chewy yet balanced and delicious."
92 Points

"At the heart of the Chianti Classico region, this estate is responsible for some of the most elegant and traditional expressions of this fabled wine. A bright cherry flavor is framed by oak-driven tones of vanilla spice and mocha."
91 Points

"Medium ruby-red. Brooding aromas of redcurrant, graphite, violet and spices. Sweet and pliant in the mouth but not soft, with pure flavors of dark plum, redcurrant and gunflint. Finishes with noble tannins and good backbone. This is currently still folded in on itself: I'd cellar it another two years prior to opening a bottle.
Rating: 90(+?)"
90 Points

"Fresh, bright and racy with tangy plum and raspberry fruit; juicy, lively and charming with balance, depth and style; snappy and long."
90 Points

The description doesn't mention this, but the label says this one is from organic vines/grapes. A nice one to collect.

Castello di Volpaia overlooks the village of Radda in Chianti. The town was built in the 11th century as a fortified village on the Florence/Siena border. Although only part of the original protective walls and two of its six towers are still standing, the medieval layout and buildings within the village are still intact, making Volpaia one of the best preserved villages of its...

Learn About Sangiovese

Sangiovese (SAHN-gee-oh-VAY-zee) Blood of Jove (literally translated) The principal grape of Chianti - in fact, the principle grape of all of Tuscany - has had its ups and downs. For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
