Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 15.0%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Capanna Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is thick, muscular and broad on the palate with leather, green tea, and spice. The powerful core underlies the fleshy exterior of the wine. Full-bodied with a long aftertaste.

Critical Acclaim

"Very rich on the nose with blackberries and blueberries. Full-bodied with chewy tannins. Lots of fruit and character on the finish. A well-structured Riserva. Better in 2015. "
95 Points

"The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva bursts from the glass with dark cherries, flowers, mint and licorice. This is a full-bodied, richly textured Brunello that impresses for its balance and sense of proportion. Layers of super-ripe, dark fruit flow through to the intense finish. The 2006 Riserva is obviously young today, but it is full of promise. The wine was vinified in conical oak vats and aged in Slavonian oak for 44 months. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. "
93 Points

"Bright, dark red. Slightly high-toned aromas of black cherry, licorice and mint. A distinctly dark expression of sangiovese, densely packed, sappy and backward, with excellent breadth and a suggestion of saline minerality. Finishes with serious tannins and excellent lift. Comes across as a bit less sweet than the 2007 classico, but also fresher and more structured. Makes that wine seem warmer, but this one is also carrying 15% alcohol.
Rating: 92(+?)"

Learn About Sangiovese

Sangiovese (SAHN-gee-oh-VAY-zee) Blood of Jove (literally translated) The principal grape of Chianti - in fact, the principle grape of all of Tuscany - has had its ups and downs. For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
