Winemaker's Notes

#33 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2012

Blau has a cherry purple glint and shows an interesting range of aromatic notes and complexity. Fresh and balanced, complex and fruity, with notes completely reflecting the terroir. This wine has a fresh finish, with a hint of spice and minerality.

Critical Acclaim

"Dense yet lively, this expressive red shows morello cherry, floral, licorice and mineral flavors supported by light, firm tannins and fresh acidity. Mountain herb and smoke notes keep this from turning candied, but the sweet fruit lingers nicely. Drink now through 2016. 6,500 cases made."

Learn About Can Blau

The D.O. Montsant, where Can Blau is located, is a horse shoe shaped appellation that surrounds the D.O. Priorat on three sides. It should have been included on the Priorat appellation but was excluded. Can Blau is composed of 60 acres of vineyards with an average age of 35 years. The soils are similar to Priorat with Montsant being a bit more complex with a mixture of slate (llicorella), sandy clay and chalk.

The most popular red varieties of Spain include Tempranillo and Garnacha (Grenache). Whites don't garner quite as much recognition, but there are some regional varieties not to be missed, like Albarino...
