    Winemaker Notes

Bright red with touches of the violet of youth. Deep, opaque color The nose dominated by the aromas of ripe red fruits with touches reminiscent of almonds and walnuts. The palate is well-structured and smooth but with a refreshing acidity. Rich in taste and developing flavors of cooked fruits and licorice.

    Campos de Viento, Spain
Campos de Viento is made in the town of Mota del Cuervo, in the province of Cuenca, around 150km south-east of Madrid, with the vineyards slightly to the north of the town. The winery was built in 2009 and contains the latest technology for fermentation, as well as a sizeable barrel room and a good capacity for storing and blending wines.

The Campos de Viento vineyards cover around 100 H, in three large estates. The climate is generally dry and there are few problems with disease - the main threat for viticulture in this region are frosts in the spring, given the altitude. The old vines are all grown as bush vines.

These vines, give small bunches with small individual berries, and are therefore quite concentrated with fruit. It is this fruit which makes the basis for Campos de Viento.

Notoriously food-friendly, long-lasting and Spain’s most widely planted grape, Tempranillo is the star variety of red wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The Rioja terms Joven, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva indicate both barrel and bottle time before release. Traditionally blended in Rioja with Garnacha, plus a bit of Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano, the Tempranillo in Ribera del Duero typically stands alone. Somm Secret—Tempranillo claims many different names depending on location. In Penedès, it is called Ull de Llebre and in Valdepeñas, goes by Cencibel. Known as Tinta Roriz in Portugal, Tempranillo plays an important role in Port wine.

The Moors gave it the name, ‘Manxa,’ which fittingly means ‘parched earth.’ La Mancha, the largest Spanish wine producing region in all of Spain, is one of its hottest and driest. Sturdy and drought-resistant white varieietes like Airen, Viura and Verdejo thrive in this environment.
