Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Cherry-red with golden rim, lively, clear and bright. The first sensations on the nose are of the fruit: cherries, plums, blackberries, etc. with hints of mountain herbs, accompanied by the sweetness of the vanilla and coconut and the soft, spicy nuances extracted from the oak. On the palate it proves a smooth, aromatic wine asking to be enjoyed. The aftertaste is fresh and persistent.

Perfect with a warm crispy duck and spinach salad or try with traditional sausages and Serrano ham.

The bouquet of cherry and raspberry is sprightly and mildly leafy, with hints of leather and dried cheese. The palate is whispy, with red-fruit flavors of raspberry and plum along with mild herbal notes, cocoa powder and dry spice. A basic, lighter-bodied Rioja with a traditional tilt.

Campo Viejo, Spain
Campo Viejo Winery Video

Campo Viejo has a long history that dates back to the Roman Empire. However, it has been only in the last century that their name became synonymous with Rioja wines. From the first vintage – brewed in the former Ortigüela winery in 1959 – to the creation of the famous ‘Rioja Bottle’ in 1961 and the unveiling of their new state-of-the-art sustainable winery in 2001, Campo Viejo has been at the forefront of Rioja winemaking.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
