Winemaker's Notes

Blend: 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot

It's hard to tell where the variety ends and the vineyard begins. Our 2006 Alcance says El Maíten in one breath and Cabernet Sauvignon in the next. The color is deep; the flavors are ripe and redolent of black fruit, mocha, cherries and plums; the tannins are rich, round and pleasing."
- Marcela Chandía, Winemaker

"Scents of chocolate dust carry through this elegant cabernet..."

It seems like most winemakers say their cabs and bordeaux blends have "rich, round and pleasing" tannins but in this case it's an accurate description. Rather than looking west to Napa or east to Bordeaux I guess more and more we should be looking south for bold, affordable reds.

The vineyards are protected by the Pacific on the west and the Andes mountains on the east. This could help explain why the climate changes more from east to west than north to south - also why the country has remained phylloxera free....

Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
