Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The sumptuous bouquet of this 2013 Jensen Vineyard Pinot Noir is savory and rich like brioche. Notes of cherry pie, white pepper and a hint of rose petal marry wonderfully with the incredibly harmonious and very complex yet tart palate of blue fruits, spice, limestone minerality and a mouth-coating texture. This wine is juicy and structured and promises a very long, alluring life ahead.

A stunning range of black sage, fresh bay leaf, hearty mulberry, exotic cinnamon, raw beef and baking spice converge for a rugged yet pretty nose on this bottling from a vineyard planted in 1975. Elderberry and elderflower show on the sip, as do beet juice, dried ginger, crushed rocks, potting soils and a concentrated potpourri of purple flowers.

The 2013 Calera Jensen Vineyard Pinot Noir is remarkable. The wine's purity begins with red fruits and minerals in the aroma and settles onto a palate showing impeccable balance and smoothness. The crisp and lively finish indicates that it will require a decade in the cellar before it is at its best. (Tasted: November 18, 2016, San Francisco, CA)

From an accountant crushing yield of 1.12 tons per acre, the 2013 Pinot Noir Jensen Vineyard was aged 17 months in 30% new French oak. It offers a beautiful array of sappy flowers, forest floor and darker raspberry and cherry fruits to go with a medium to full-bodied, seamless, silky style on the palate that continues to flesh out and gain richness with time in the glass. Like all of Josh's wines, it's impeccably balanced and has first rate purity of fruit, ripe tannin structure and a great finish. It certainly offers incredible pleasure today, yet will be even better with short term cellaring and will have 15 years of overall longevity.

Dense, with plum, blackberry and blueberry flavors, this firmly tannic version shows a sense of elegance and suppleness. Stylish and revealing new flavor nuances. Drink now through 2023.

Calera, California
Calera Winery Video

In 1975, legendary vintner and American wine pioneer Josh Jensen founded Calera (Spanish for “lime kiln”) high in the remote Gavilan Mountains of California’s windswept Central Coast. There, in Mt. Harlan’s low-yielding, limestone-rich soils and cool, arid climate, he began planting what would ultimately become six small estate vineyards. Today, these vineyards are recognized as some of the New World’s most revered Pinot Noir sites.

Calera is a vision, and Calera’s wines truly express the sense of place. Rather than follow the recommended path, Josh Jensen became a pioneer in American Pinot Noir. Taking his cue from the great domaines of Burgundy, which have grown grapes in limestone soil for centuries, he set out in search of the perfect spot in California to create wines unique to the world but in the style of the greatest wines of France. Site selection was vital as he ventured off the grid to plant on the site of an old limekiln in the Gavilan Mountains of California's Central Coast.

Under the stewardship of Winemaker Mike Waller, each vineyard is renowned for producing singular wines of uncommon purity, elegance and aging potential. In addition to its beloved single-vineyard wines, Calera partners with some of the top vineyards on California’s majestic Central Coast to make Calera’s beautiful Central Coast wines, including a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
