Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

This rich and velvety wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère and Petit Verdot.

Like the bull on the label and Salvador Amenábar, the talented young artist who painted him, Calcu wines are exuberant and full of possibility, with each vintage revealing a different aspect of the Colchagua Valley's dynamic character.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva contains 10% Carmenere and 10% Petit Verdot in its makeup. It displays aromas of spice box, incense, damp earth, and black currant. This sets the stage for a medium-bodied, firm, spicy wine that in nicely proportioned and lengthy. This very good value will also deliver enjoyment over the next 3-4 years."
87 Points

"Bright purple. Cherry and dark chocolate on the pungent nose. The palate offers spicy black and blue fruit flavors, with notes of menthol and cracked pepper building with air. This tangy, sharply focused midweight finishes with firm grip and a slight dry edge."

Learn About Calcu

In the local Mapuche language, Calcu means “healing doctor” or “magician.” And indeed, winemakers Alejandro Jofre and Ricardo Rivadeniera have created a magical "Super Chilean" blend that expresses the diversity of the Colchagua Valley.

Like the bull on label, Calcu is exuberant and unrestrained. Rather than being tied to a particular terroir, Calcu is made with grapes harvested from throughout the Colchagua Valley, revealing different aspects of the valley’s dynamic character with every vintage

This could help explain why the climate changes more from east to west than north to south - also why the country has remained phylloxera free....

Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
