Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Lithe, graceful, powerful, balanced. Great dancers or great wine, and certainly Ciel 2006. Fresh aromas of blueberry compote lead to flavors that are bright and lithe on the palate. The flavors are complex, deep and compelling. Tannins are soft, but present. This vintage of Ciel du Cheval will age gracefully for more than a decade, and do so on complexity and balance rather than sheer size.

Blend: 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot, 12% Petit Verdot

Critical Acclaim

"Supple, round and generous, delivering a tempting mouthful of ripe cherry, mulberry, mint and exotic spice flavors that mingle enticingly on the silky finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2016. 415 cases made."
93 Points

"Medium ruby-red. Captivating nose melds plum, currant, bitter chocolate, lavender and herbs. Juicy, spicy and penetrating, with noteworthy cut and aromatic perfume to its flavors of raspberry, plum and spice. A broad wine with lovely detail and a light touch. The tannins are quite fine."
92 Points

"The 2006 Ciel du Cheval Vineyard is a blend of 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot, and 12% Petit Verdot aged for 19 months in 40% new French oak. Dark ruby-colored, it exhibits a spicy, toasty nose of violets, black cherry, and blackberry. Plush and layered on the palate, it has loads of succulent black fruit, enough ripe tannin to evolve for several more years, excellent concentration, and a lengthy, pure finish. It will be at its best from 2012 to 2021. "
