Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

62% Cab Franc, 31% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot Red Mountain.

This, of all our 2007s, takes the most time to open up in the glass or decanter. Initially reticent, Bel Canto blossoms into a perfumed potpourri of baking spice, black fruit and intense minerality. It has the roundest mouthfeel and softest tannins of all the 2007s, though the tannins have a sneaky length, fine grain and expanding quality through the finish that bodes well for aging. I believe this is our finest Bel Canto to date; a wine that will reward patience and time in your cellar.

Cabernet Franc blended with 31% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot, the Cadence 2007 Cara Mia Vineyard Bel Canto is pungently redolent of arbor vitae, juniper berry, mint, fennel, and sage, which as a sort of herbal liqueur join forces with cassis, blueberry, as well as honey or quince such as were also suggested in the corresponding 2008. Less polished than its two successors, this, nevertheless, displays a quality of tannin reasonably fine-grained and capable of adding a certain invigoration to a long finish.

Cadence Winery Image
Cadence is dedicated to showcasing the finest vineyard sites in Washington State. Their Bordeaux-styled blends are their interpretation of the best qualities reflected in Washington's greatest vineyard terroir. Cadence's winemaking philosophy is based on the belief that blending creates a balanced wine of greater character than the individual components. Their wines express the power, intensity or elegance of the vineyard reflected in the characteristics of the varietals on the vineyard site.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

Yakima Valley Wine

As the first recognized wine-growing region in the Pacific Northwest, Yakima Valley is centrally located within Washington’s vast Columbia Valley. The region also includes Washington’s oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines, Otis Vineyard, planted in 1957, and Harrison Hill Vineyard, planted in 1963. Yakima Valley contains three smaller sub-regions: Rattlesnake Hills, Red Mountain, and Snipes Mountain and is ideal for both red and white wine production. In fact, Yakima Valley is Washington’s most diverse region, boasting more than 40 different grape varieties over about one hundred miles.

The cooler parts of the valley are home to almost half of the Chardonnay and Riesling produced in the state! Both are made in a wide range of styles depending on the conditions of the vineyard site.

But its warmer locations yield a large proportion of Washington’s best Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The finest Yakima Valley reds are jam-packed full of red cherry, currant, raspberry or blackberry fruit, as well as cocoa, herb, spice and savory notes, and exhibit a supple texture, great body, focus and length.
