Winemaker Notes

Wine Spectator's 2006 Top 100 - #9

"The aromas leave me speechless, with freshly cut roses and lilacs that follow through to crushed blackberry and cherry undertones. Full-bodied but extremely balanced, with velvety yet caressing tannins and a finish that goes on for minutes. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best after 2008."
-Wine Spectator

The top product of the Brancaia brand is the Brancaia IL BLU, IGT (Supertuscan), highly acclaimed by the international wine press. Since the vintage 1997, this wine has been rewarded with the TRE BICCHIERI by the Gambero Rosso / Slow Food. The Brancaia IL BLU 2001 (93 points) was quoted by Wine Spectator as "a real beauty" and Wine Spectator rated the vintage 98 with the high score of 94 points and concluded comments with: "Brancaia is a new star". That reputation has since been kept high as the recent 2004 vintage was rated by Wine Spectator with an impressive 96 points score. For many wine lovers all over the world, this is already a classic.

This is fresh, offering black cherry and plum fruit backed by great acidity, with lovely midpalate energy and ripeness, backed by a line of firm tannins for support. Shows fine concentration, harmony and length. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.—Brancaia Il Blu Non-blind Retrospective (January 2022). Best from 2024.

Brancaia, Italy
Brancaia Winery Video

Founded by Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer in the famed hillsides of Tuscany more than 30 years ago, Brancaia is the modern face of luxury Italian wine. Rooted in the bold Super Tuscan movement that forever changed Italy’s winemaking culture, the wines of Brancaia blend classic Italian grapes with international varieties, bringing a decidedly modern touch to a centuries-old wine region.

Today the winery is still family owned and operated, led by the Widmers’ daughter, winemaker Barbara Widmer. Barbara has excelled at perfecting the style and quality of Brancaia wines by producing elegant, complex wines with a strong Tuscan identity.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
