Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

This has a pretty purple color with bright reflections and aromas of red berries. The palate is silky and velvety.

Ideal for game and cooked meat in a red sauce.

Critical Acclaim

"Still tight, with a core of red currant and blackberry fruit wound up with red licorice, plum eau-de-vie and spice notes holding sway for now. Tight-grained grip on the finish will need cellaring to stretch out. Best from 2013 through 2020. "
90 Points

"The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition, which is their biggest cuvee (close to 3,400 cases) is outstanding. A blend of 75% Grenache and the rest mostly Syrah and Mourvedre, with small amounts of Counoise, Vaccarese and Cinsault, this wine, aged in foudres, has an open-knit, fragrant bouquet of black cherries, spicy, peppery herbs and licorice. It is medium-garnet in color, full-bodied, generous, corpulent, and a sexy, complex, relatively evolved Chateauneuf du Pape to drink over the next 8-10 years. "

Learn About Bosquet des Papes

Winemaker"s since 1860, the Boiron family knows a thing or two about their craft. Learn About Chateauneuf-du-Pape

(shah-too-NUHF due Pahp) Southern Rhone's landmark region, Chateauneuf du Pape, was the first region to gain AC status in France. That was the 1920s - it's history goes much further back than that. As the name suggests, the wine region was named after the new papal home, referring to the period of time in the 1300's when the pope resided in Avignon instead of Rome. Notable Facts...

Learn About Rhone Red Blends

The Rhone region of France has a delightful selection of red varieties. There are 22 grapes allowed in the Rhone AOC, about half of them red. Most of these varieties are used as secondary blending partners, often comprising less than 10% of the blend. The primary red players of Rhone blends are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Most wines from the Southern Rhone use Grenache as their...
