Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Straw yellow color with a slight green tinge. On the nose, citrus aromas with ripe fruits and some floral notes and complexity from the lees aging. Attractive and unctuous with a lingering finish and well balanced acidity.

The 2014 Godello Sobre Lías is a cuvée from different vineyards on grey slate soils from the Vilamartín de Valdeorras village; it fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and was aged in contact with the lees for six months with weekly bâttonage. If they consider 2015 a Mediterranean vintage, 2014 is quite the opposite, a cool year. Subtle and elegant, it whispers to you about white fruit, bay leaf and hints of fennel. The palate is nicely textured with a subtle minerality that makes it quite long and supple.

It all began in 1885 when an ancestor of the Prada family, passionately believing in the nobility of the Godello grape variety, planted the first vines on the high, slatey hillsides of the Sil valley. The winemaking tradition of the family originated with the beloved person of José Ramón Gayoso, vinegrower at Portela. Contrary to the custom of the time he established the first vineyard planted entirely with Godello, being convinced of the potential of this variety, which is native to Valdeorras. Little by little he expanded these small parcels of vines, or ‘Pezas’, carefully choosing the best sites around and about Portela. In subsequent years many of these parcels were sold to other growers, leaving only the Pedrouzos estate. In 2001 the current generation of the family began to buy back the small vineyards which had belonged to their forebear, spurred on by the possibilities offered by the grape variety, the special qualities of the Valdeorras region, and the lasting influence of that original pioneer who went against the spirit of the age in planting Pedrouzos, the oldest Godello vineyard in Galicia.

Godello is native to northwest Spain and has experienced a major revival in the last 20 years. Godello wines are typically sleek and lightly creamy in texture. Barrel fermentation and lees stirring are typical in Valdeorras, Spain where the grape comes from. These winemaking techniques make the most of Godello's inherent structure and help bring out its lovely floral character. Somm Secret—DNA profiling says that Spain’s Godello is actually identical to the Portugese grape variety Gouveio, which grows throughout the Douro and Dão (where it used to mistakenly be called Verdelho).

Just to the south of Bierzo, the steeply terraced Valdeorras Spanish wine region is a respected source of both red and white wines. Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet) and Mencía are the principal red varieties while Godello and Palomino compose the majority of this region's whites.
