Winemaker's Notes

Cherry-red in color with light brick red hues from the aging. Bright and attractive. The aromas of the wine are distinct and elegant. The aromas of noble wood are perfectly blended with those of ripe fruit.

Blend: 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 10% Mazuelo and Graciano

Critical Acclaim

"Readers should be purchasing the 2001 Muga Reserva by the case. It is a stunning, unfiltered Rioja made from 70% Tempranillo, 20% Grenache, and the rest Mazuelo and Graciano. A big, rich bouquet of raspberries, cherries, graphite, and tobacco leaves is accompanied by abundant fruit, an expansive, medium to full-bodied palate, elegant, lush flavors, sweet tannin, and hints of cedar and white chocolate."
92 Points

"Moderately saturated medium red. Subdued but pure aromas of cherry, raspberry, minerals, leather and tobacco. A classic Rioja: dense but light on its feet, with aromatic flavors of strawberry and cherry framed by harmonious acidity. This offers subtle fruit and excellent mouth coverage. Quite young but already smooth. Finishes with sweet tannins, very firm backbone and lovely persistence. A terrific vintage for this wine, and a great Rioja value."

Amazing Rioja from a legendary vintage... you can drink this now with some time in the decanter or you can keep it in your cellar for another 10 years. It's a classic red from the Rioja Alta.

Learn About Rioja

(ree-OH-hah) This highly regarded area of Spain makes some of the best Tempranillo-based wines in the world. Once the only DOCa (recently joined by Priorat in 2001), Rioja is divided into 3 sub-regions: Rioja Baja, Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa. There are 4 red varieties and 3 white varieties allowed in the Rioja DOC. Tempranillo definitely takes center stage, followed by Garnacha...
