Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.0%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The three varieties that make up this wine (40% Monastrell, 40% Syrah, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon) come together to shape a well structured, concentrated, and intensely aromatic blend. Good structure, mouth filling, powerful, black fruit and spiciness from Syrah, juicy and fresh.

Critical Acclaim

"Focused and fresh, this has aromas of berry and integrated citrus. It feels rubbery and lush, with acidic cut and roasted flavors of plum, blackberry and leather. It finishes mildly roasted and earthy, with a leathery lasting impression."
89 Points

"(40% each of monastrell and syrah, with 20% cabernet sauvignon): Bright purple. Smoky aromas of cherry-vanilla and cassis, with a spicy quality that gains strength with air. Juicy and broad on entry, then firmer in the mid-palate, offering sweet black and blue fruit flavors lifted by tangy acidity. Still quite primary and in need of some bottle age. Finishes sappy, spicy and nicely persistent.

Learn About Bodegas Carchelo

Bodegas Carchelo dates from the early 1980s and pioneering efforts to modernize viticulture in what had been a backwater viticultural region. Founding partner Juan Sierva's nearly 700 acres of prime vineyards are widely distributed in the region, at widely varying altitudes and exposures. Varieties grown feature Monastrell (in France Mourvèdre, both ungrafted head-pruned and wire-trained vineyards) plus Syrah, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Learn About Jumilla

(hue-MILL-ah) Created as a DO in 1966, Jumilla has undergone a revolution of sorts in the past few decades. The new generation of wines have caused the region to blossom and exports have increased. The region itself is nicely settled in Southwest Spain, somewhat inland, between La Mancha and the Mediterranean sea, creating a good grape-growing climate. Notable Facts The...

Learn About Other Red Blends

Other Red Red wines are certainly not limited to Cabernet and Pinot Noir - or even Nebbiolo and Grenache. There are a multitude of grape varieties throughout the world, however, in a Darwinian sense, survival of the fittest only brings us wines made from grapes that can adapt to changing climates and winemaking techniques. Notable Facts Our other red wines primarily consists of...
