Winemaker Notes

"Bodegas Campillo was built in 1990 by Julio Faustino Martinez, the owner of Bodegas Faustino, for the purpose of creating limited production, hand-crafted wines. The wines come from a 125-acre vineyard in the Laguardia region of the Rioja Alavesa. These are traditionally styled Riojas in the best sense of that word."

"The 1994 Gran Reserva is medium ruby with a classy nose of cedar and vanilla, red and black fruits. On the palate this elegant wine is complete and seamless with sweet fruit and complexity of flavor. Perhaps this should not be surprising because 1994 was an outstanding vintage in Rioja (the best before 2001) and Campillo was able to take advantage. The wine is drinking splendidly now and should easily last for another 10 years."

Tasted direct in the cellar, this has a very complete and mature feel with leather and cedar amid dried plums and cherries. The palate has concise, fine layered tannins. There’s elegance here. Tangy, nicely balanced finish.

Bodegas Campillo, Spain
Bodegas Campillo Winery Video
In the heart of the famed Rioja region, Spain's premier winemaking appellation and source of the country's finest red wines, Bodegas Campillo is set like a rare jewel against the dramatic backdrop of the Cantabria Mountains.

Campillo is produced by Bodegas Faustino, one of the most celebrated names in modern Spanish winemaking and the Rioja's single largest source of Reserva and Gran Reserva wines. However, this showcase winery is the Julio Faustino Martinez' personal mission create limited production, hand-crafted wines of exceptional quality united with architectural beauty.

Martinez selected 125 acres in the Laguardia region of the Rioja Alavesa, widely considered the finest area in the Rioja, as the site of his prized estate. The Campillo vineyards, characterized by arid, lime-clay soil and sheltered from extreme weather by the nearby mountain range, offer optimum growing conditions for Tempranillo, the classic Rioja varietal.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
