Ratings Pedigree:

Winemaker's Notes

A thick bouquet of black cherry, cedar and vanilla to match the deep ruby color of the wine. Round and supple in the mouth with medium body and decent acidity. Loads of dark berries from the old vines - black cherries and blackberries dominate. On the finish, the dark berries fade, leaving some spiciness and smoke, with good length. The tannins are firm, but restrained; the wine is balanced.

Learn About Bodegas Ateca

Bodegas Ateca is a joint project between the Gil winery family and the well-known importer, Jorge Ordonez. The bodegas is located in the Calatayud region of northeastern Spain. The majority of the vineyards are grown in highly permeable and healthy soils with a high amount of limestone. The soils are rocky, loose and low in nutrients. The climate in this region varies vastly from day to night, allowing for more balance between acidity and alcohol.

The main varietal here is Garnacha grown from old-vines up to 80-100 years old.

Whites don't garner quite as much recognition, but there are some regional varieties not to be missed, like Albarino...

Popular in Spain (called Garnacha), Australia and the southern Rhone region of France, Grenache is the primary grape in regions such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Tavel, and Priorat.
