Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 15.0%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Ruby red color of remarkable intensity. Excellent aromatic complexity with notes of ripe fruit and a fine touch of smoke and coffee. Rich on the palate with an excellent concentration.

Critical Acclaim

"An ambitious style, with very bold licorice, fruitcake and spice aromas giving way to richly layered blackberry, raspberry ganache and linzer torte notes. The long, toasty finish has plenty of fruit in reserve. Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2011. 600 cases imported."
91 Points

"Norton's 2007 Malbec Privada is medium purple in color with aromas of damp earth, spice box, a hint of balsamic, violets, and black cherry. Medium-bodied, savory, ripe, and concentrated, on the palate it reveals good volume and balance leading to a medium-length finish. This tasty effort can be approached now and will drink well through 2018. "

Learn About Bodega Norton Map ItMap It

Astonished at the features of the place, and pushed by his visionary spirit, in 1895, an English Engineer, Mr. Edmund J. P. Norton planted the first vines importing them from France, thereby giving origin to what was the first winery in the area. Almost 100 years later, Austrian businessman, Mr. Gernot Langes-Swarovski, travelled to Mendoza and experienced the same fascination for...

Learn About Argentina

(ahr-jen-TEE-nah) Now fifth in the world for wine production, Argentina is catching up in the quality wine sector. A long time wine producer, Argentina used to make wine in order to drink it, not export it. And so the wines produced were quaffable and rustic and made for the local's everyday dinner. Yet it's hard not to get caught up in the wine market of the world and some...
