Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2009 Blackstone Sonoma Reserve Merlot is full of ripe flavors and soft round textures with notes of black cherry, plum, cedar spice, and toasty oak. Oak aging contributes toasty spice and vanilla overtones and plenty of smooth weight to the wine.

Blend: 90% Merlot, 5% Syrah, 5% Malbec

In short: this stuff is awful, not worth even 2 dollars a bottle The whole story: I was concerned after uncorking the first bottle as the cork was of poor quality and seemed to want to fall into the bottle with only slight pressure. The color was a dark redish grey that was further dulled by floating sediment. I poured a full glass and noted strong alcohol flavors with a harsh nose and taste. I somehow finished the small glass and noted a decent amount of sediment resting on the bottom. I bought 12 bottles and therefore decided to give it another shot assuming it was just one bad bottle... I was wrong same awful stuff in bottle #2. I have fallen for this trick before... Cheap price high wine rating and awful possibly turned wine. They should not be able to sell this wine. It gives you headaches after only 1 glass and tastes horrible. This coming from someone who thinks the boxed wine isn't too bad....

Sonoma County has always been Blackstone's home and inspiration. Since our beginning we’ve established a reputation for consistently delivering balanced, reliable wines of uncompromising quality

From the start, our goal has been to produce smooth, flavorful, harmonious wines with rich fruit, supple texture, and balanced oak. Early on, this approach found its ideal expression in our Merlot, which soon became — and still remains — America's favorite Merlot.

Learn About Sonoma County

Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about a half the amount of wine as her northeasterly neighbor. But Sonoma, with her size, is able to vouch for more diversity within her borders, including sub-AVAs that are climatically varied. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the...

Learn About Merlot

Merlot(mehr-LOW) No second fiddle Merlot is coming back into its own. High popularity led to mass production, which then led to a backlash towards the variety (remember Miles in Sideways?). But passionate Merlot producers, and of course the right bank of Bordeaux, continued to produce quality versions of this grape. Merlot remains the principle grape of top chateaux in St...
