Winemaker Notes

A blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, this wine is probably the most serious wine Bevan Cellars has released to date. Last years Double E always had a beautiful round quality to it, that made it approachable and rich, but this wine has a steel rod for a back bone. It isn't hard, but it's natural acidity gives it a firm quality, no one will taste this and think it is a play toy, it grabs your attention. Dark fruit flavors dominate, but the Franc expresses itself as hints of tobacco and spice. Cellar it for a year and you should be very pleased. I wish we could hold this wine for a year then release it to "wow's," but we can't, we will trust that you will.

The Showket vineyard is now known as “Au Paradis,” since it was purchased by Peter Michael Winery in late 2009. Composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Cabernet Franc, the 2009 Red Wine Ee Cuvee Showket Vineyard has a deep garnet-brick color. It comes bounding out of the glass with rambunctious notes of plum preserves, fruitcake, blackberry pie and dried roses with touches of cloves and espresso. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with black fruit preserves and loads of savory and earthy nuances, supported by velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long with a minty kick.

Back in 1995, when Victoria and Russell Bevan started dating in Des Moines, their favorite game was "Guess the Wine." They would take turns bringing a blind wine and make the other person guess the varietal and region. When Bevan looks back on those dates, there is little mystery about how they arrived where they are today.

Soon after that, the couple moved to Minneapolis and fell in with a group of wine lovers whose passion and knowledge fanned their flame. They started taking regular trips to wine country in California, where they met many of the finest winemakers. They were so inspired by them that to this day they follow many of their principles. They learned first-hand about Philip Togni's attention to every minute detail. Saw how Bob Foley would only pick fruit if his palate -- not some lab test -- told him it was time. They heard Greg La Follette telling them how careful you have to be when making decisions in the winery because even the smallest decision has an impact on the final wine. Their conversations still reverberate with them whether the couple is at a vineyard or in the winery.
