Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

52% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Malbec.

Knights Valley is a vineyard that Beringer has a rich history with, and one that consistently rewards me with wonderful fruit to work with. Blending the Meritage is both challenging and rewarding with such interesting blocks to choose from–each one expressing an interesting and unique piece of the rustic terroir. The 2008 Meritage has aromas of baked cherry and plums, candied violets and cinnamon. It is marked by a ripe, generous palette of plum spices and mocha, rounded out by a lush, lingering finish.
–Laurie Hook, Winemaker

Critical Acclaim

"Good deep red-ruby. Crushed berries and licorice on the nose; begins a bit porty but freshening minerality emerges with aeration. Sweet, lush and concentrated, with dark berry and chocolate flavors dominating. The wine's building, tongue-coating tannins call for a year or two of patience. This wine was formerly called Alluvium. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the...
