    Winemaker Notes

For this Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, winemaker Phillip Baxter makes carefully considered barrel selections to craft a wine displaying the amazing diversity of the Anderson Valley microappellations. Made using five different Clones, the “black label” is a vibrant, spicy and elegant Pinot Noir. The nose is focused and floral with scents of cranberry, violets, orange blossom and allspice. On the palate flavors of pomegranate, plum, and black cherry combine with elements of exotic spice resulting in a smooth rich mouthfeel. The lingering finish is alive with the memory of ripe fruits while the wines’ mineral core leaves the palate fresh and poised for the next sip.

In 2002, two generations of our family - both winemakers by trade - came together to create BAXTER, highlighting the very best in North Coast viticulture. Father & son partners, Phil L Baxter and Phil T G Baxter, produce handcrafted single vineyard wines focusing on the Anderson Valley and surrounding Mendocino appellations. Known primarily for their Pinot Noir, the pair combine over fifty years of experience, producing wines naturally, applying instinct and using old-world techniques. They craft wines that possess a notable ‘pureness’ of fruit, reflecting the unique identity of each vineyard site.

Anderson Valley, located in Mendocino County just above Sonoma County, is one of California’s coolest AVAs, allowing it a long growing season. Only 15 miles long, the region makes a slice eastward through the mountains, from the frigid Pacific Ocean. Dramatic diurnal temperature variations here preserve grape acidity and thus freshness in the finished wines. These are prime conditions for growing Pinot Noir, and the valley produces many fine versions. Characteristics of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir typically include crisp acidity, cranberry and strawberry notes as well as earthy notes of forest floor and mushroom.

Still Pinot Noir, however, is only part of the story. Pinot Noir, along with Chardonnay, are also grown for Anderson Valley’s exceptional sparkling wines. Produced via the traditional method, these offer a classic toasty note from lees aging, bright, complex fruit notes and a clean, refreshing character.
