Barossa Valley Estate E & E Black Pepper Shiraz 2002
Syrah/Shiraz
from Barossa Valley, Australia
winemaker's notes:
#21 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2005!
Deep brick, earthen red with youthful purple hues. Intense lifted aromas of ripe cherry, plum, spice and pepper with subtle chocolatey, coffee like overtones. Full, rich, ripe and fleshy, the palate delivers all that the nose promises. Ripe fruit is harmoniously integrated with subtle oak characters providing a long, satisfying, velvety finish.
Serve with richly flavored meats, pastas and strong cheeses.
critical acclaim:
"The 2002 E & E Black Pepper Shiraz spent 18 months in French and American oak, 30% new. It is opaque purple-colored with an alluring nose of cedar, pencil lead, lavender, and blueberry. This leads to a Shiraz with good depth and grip, ripe flavors, and enough tannin to evolve."

I'm fairly new to the wine scene (6 years), but this was an excellent Shiraz. Good color, and the black pepper flavour really comes out in this particular wine. It is on my list, alongside the 1998 Peju Cabernet.
