For a long time the ancestors of the Baron of Vilar have been devoting themselves to Port wine, but it was much later, in 1828, that the title was conferred.
Both families, Kopke and Van Zeller, which followed this title, besides being linked by family, had a very important role in the Port Wine Trade by creating their own companies and by working on, for instance, Quinta do Noval, among others.
In 1996, the Baron of Vilar decided to register the title "Barão de Vilar" (in Portuguese) to use it for Port Wine and other top quality wines, in order to perpetuate the family wine tradition and to promote the result of centuries of enological practices. Soon after, the Baron founded the company "Barão de Vilar - Vinhos, S. A." with office at Vila Nova de Gaia and started to produce wines from the Douro region in S. João da Pesqueira and Torre de Moncorvo.
