Winemaker's Notes

Castello Banfi Rosso di Montalcino is a wine of noble origins and impressive original thinking. Made from 100% select Brunello clones, Rosso di Montalcino is considered Brunello`s younger sibling. Rosso di Montalcino is aged less than its elder counterpart - 12 months in wood (half in French oak barrique and half in Slavonian oak casks) followed by at least 6 months in the bottle before release. It is deep ruby-red in color with a dry, round, velvety taste and generous body - characteristics similar to those desired in a great Brunello.

The color is a very deep and intense red with violet hints; the bouquet is of red fruits, raspberries and cherries, but also with sweet hints of cream. On the palate, it has good structure and well developed tannins, soft yet powerful at the same time. A very well balanced and harmonious wine.

Learn About Banfi Map ItMap It

In 1978 John and Harry Mariani, owners of the U.S. wine importer Banfi Vintners, established the award winning vineyard estate and winery Castello Banfi in the Brunello region of Tuscany. A constellation of single vineyards located on ideal sites cover about one third of the 7,100 acre (2,830 hectares) estate. The remaining land consists of bucolic meadows, olive and plum groves,...

Learn About Tuscany

(TUSS-can-ee) One of the most important wine regions in Italy, Tuscany is home to the cities of Florence and Siena, the districts of Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino, and the wineries of Sassicaia, Tignanello and Ornellaia. Tuscany is also home to the indigenous Italian grape variety, Sangiovese. Most of the wine coming from Tuscany is made from some clone of this...

Learn About Sangiovese

Sangiovese (SAHN-gee-oh-VAY-zee) Blood of Jove (literally translated) The principal grape of Chianti - in fact, the principle grape of all of Tuscany - has had its ups and downs. For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
