Winemaker Notes

Bg Red Reserve is our most complex and endearing wine. It as an artful blend of our most powerful Merlot and our most graceful Cabernet Franc. We hand selecled the highest quality grapes from a specific vineyard, Pocai Ranch, that our family has continuously farmed since 1906. We modestly call our best efforts Bg Red Table Wine but be assured that it is our homage to Bordeaux.

Color and Aroma: Dark pigmented and garnet-purple hue, with aromas of black cherries mint, blackberry jam, vanilla, caramel, and pepper with undercurrents of eucalyptus and anise. Flavors - Black cherries and berries, a toasty vanilla and caramel surrounded by currants and bramble berries defines the palate. A lingering finish of oak spiciness and intense cherries.

Mouthfeel: Very rich in nature with firm tannins and a velvety texture. The wine tannins are complimented by the supple nature of the oak allowing for an engaging mouthfeel.

"This is a 50-50 mixture of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and so you won't find any of those big Cabernet Sauvignon flavors and tannins. The wine has soft, melted tannins, and the black cherry and tobacco flavors have a rich earthiness to them. It will probably age well, but try it now with leg of lamb."

Ballentine Winery, California
Ballentine Vineyards owns 110 acres of vines spread among the Crystal Springs Vineyard at the base of Howell Mountain; Pocai Ranch between the Napa River and the Silverado Trail and the Home Vineyard at the winery. After selling their grapes for many years to wineries; Cabernet Sauvignon to Caymus, Cabernet Franc to Rombauer, Zinfandel to Rosenblum, Ravenswood and Mondavi, Betty and Van decided to revive the Ballentine brand that Van and his dad worked at for many years at Deer Park. They started by having their grapes custom crushed for a small production in 1992. In 1995, they built a winery, behind their 100-year-old farmhouse. They revived the original bonded winery number 3595 issued to his father, John Ballentine in 1933 after prohibition ended. Ballentine Vineyards produces only red wines, which are perfectly suited to the Northern Napa Valley climate and vineyards. Our production is less than 10,000 cases of Zinfandel, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Bordeaux styled blend and with a future release of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah.
