Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Intense, deep ruby red color with subtle glimmers of garnet. The wine shows a splendid, full nose with hints of blackberries and pleasant notes of tobacco and spice. In the mouth, the wine is soft with an elegant, fresh finish and a persistent, generous acidity in the aftertaste. Full of mature tannins and fruitiness.

Blend: 90% Sangiovese 90%, 10% Canaiolo

Critical Acclaim

"Bright medium ruby-red. Ripe aromas of red cherry, redcurrant, black plum and minerals. Sweet, supple and dense on entry, then tightly wound in the middle, with flavors of dark berries and red cherry complicated by underbrush and coffee. This very well-balanced wine has harmonious acidity that nicely lifts and extends the smooth, mineral finish, which throws off notes of raspberry and blueberry. Though it?s deceptively easy to drink now, I have no doubt it will last for a long time: try cellaring a couple bottles for a good 15 to 20 years. I probably underrated this wine somewhat in my prior tastings. 92+ Points"

"The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva flows with dark cherries, licorice, earthiness and herbs. This is a dark style of Chianti, but the Sangiovese acidity cuts through the density of the fruit, leading to a pure, crystalline finish. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016."

Learn About Badia a Coltibuono Map ItMap It

Badia a Coltibuono, or "The Abbey of good harvest," lies in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, between Florence and Siena. The Abbey is approximately two thousand years old, but history records date the property back to the Etruscan civilizations of the 3rd century BC. Today, the estate is composed of vineyards, chestnut, walnut and olive trees, all of them lying on one of the best sites in the Chianti area, where the soil is very rich and the climate is mild and sunny all year round. Badia a Coltibuono is very proud to produce some of Tuscany's finest and most noble wines.

Learn About Sangiovese

Sangiovese (SAHN-gee-oh-VAY-zee) Blood of Jove (literally translated) The principal grape of Chianti - in fact, the principle grape of all of Tuscany - has had its ups and downs. For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
