Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Nice and grippy. Tightly knit with clean acidity, some toasty oak, maybe some cherry fruit, Medium fresh grape flavor which works good with many foods including chocolate.

Critical Acclaim

"Good full red. Superripe aromas of red cherry syrup and red berry cocktail, with exotic nuances of Oriental herbs and sweet almonds. Rich and dense but juicy, with wonderfully sweet yet precise flavors of ripe red cherry, marzipan and bay leaf. The very long, smooth finish shows a pretty note of red berry cocktail."

Learn About Badia a Coltibuono Map ItMap It

Badia a Coltibuono, or "The Abbey of good harvest," lies in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, between Florence and Siena. The Abbey is approximately two thousand years old, but history records date the property back to the Etruscan civilizations of the 3rd century BC. Today, the estate is composed of vineyards, chestnut, walnut and olive trees, all of them lying on one of the best sites in the Chianti area, where the soil is very rich and the climate is mild and sunny all year round. Badia a Coltibuono is very proud to produce some of Tuscany's finest and most noble wines.

For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
