    Winemaker Notes

The 2009 InSpire is quintessential Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, gobs of ripe black and red fruit supported by wonderful aromas of toasted cedar and vanilla. The wine fills the mouth with weighty flavors of blackberry, blueberry and dark chocolate, and the subtle tannins are integrated and complemented by excellent acidity. The finish is long and surprisingly balanced for such a young wine.

InSpire pairs perfectly with steaks, braised meats, lamb and pork dishes, as well as moderately spiced dishes.

Kevin BOYer and Tom SteffANCI met in Napa Valley of all places during a boring corporate meeting. Tom was actually the bureaucrat that called the meeting Kevin was attending. After the meeting, we broke away to visit some wineries and talked tirelessly about the wines that blew our minds, those we hated and the ones we would make someday if we got the chance. We also talked about what we wanted to do to make a difference and how we each thought we might be able to do something meaningful. A strong friendship ensued and after a lot of talking about creating our own wine, we finally created BOYANCI. In April of 2009 we released our first ever vintage of BOYANCI, 2006 Red Blend, a 200 case project from Pritchard Hill. Our winemaker Mia Klein (one of the most heralded winemakers in Napa Valley history, formerly of Dalla Valle, Araujo Estate, Chappellet, Viader and owner of her own amazing brand, Selene) expertly crafts our atypical Bordeaux blend into a seamless expression of Napa Valley fruit and extraction with a Bordeaux like elegance.

In October of 2009 we launched our second wine, the 2007 InSpire, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. InSpire is the slightly rebellious son of BOYANCI, our flagship wine, InSpire exhibits a youthful exuberance in both its personality and the style of the wine. As you can see, we call out the “spire” in InSpire and include a "spire" on the label to signify the brands desire to reach up and help others. Just as we do with BOYANCI, we give 10% of our profits to Coprodeli , a non- profit that builds schools clinics and housing in the most impoverished areas of Peru. It was in Peru while marveling at the wonders of the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu that we decided on the red shape at the top of our Spire.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
