Aubert Larry Hyde & Sons Vineyard Chardonnay (1.5 Liter) 2010
Chardonnay from Carneros, California
Larry Hyde & Sons Vineyard Chardonnay is a wine of immense depth and concentration. The wine exhibits dried fruit such as lemon, pineapple and even some dried ginger. Strong mineral and acid frame the body with a vin du garde-like personality. Initially, there is a floral, high toned building to candied fruits and just heaps of minerality. A wonderful green tint is in the edge of the color; this is reflective of the clonal material.
Wine Spectator - "Rich without being weighty, with intense smoke, spice, nectarine, peach and pear notes that are fresh and vibrant. Gaining depth, ending with a citrusy aftertaste."
Vinous / Antonio Galloni - "The 2010 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard blossoms from the glass with tangerine, lemon, spices and butter. It shows gorgeous minerality and freshness that balances some of the wine’s more overt tendencies. Crushed rocks, lemon peel and mint reappear on the textured, large-scaled finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020. "
Owner/winemaker Mark Aubert has had a distinguished winemaking career including a 12 year stint at Peter Michael where he followed Helen Turley. Aubert succeeded Turley again several years later at Colgin Cellars. He has been a winemaking consultant for several prestigious wineries including Sloan, Bryant and Futo. He crafts outstanding vineyard-designate Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from estate and leased vineyards in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast in a full-blown hedonistic style. The first wines were released with the 2000 vintage. Ulises Valdez is Aubert's vineyard manager. Until 2008, the two Pinot Noirs have been from the Reuling Vineyard and UV Vineyard, both located in the Sonoma Coast AVA. A new estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyard has been planted adjacent Reuling, 4 acres of Pinot Noir were planted at Ritchie Vineyard in 2008, and 9 acres of Pinot Noir have been planted at a new site high above the town of Occidental. In 2008, there were six different single vineyard Chardonnays and five Pinot Noir wines. View all Aubert Wines
About CarnerosView a map of Carneros wineries
Technically a part of Napa Valley, the Carneros region straddles both Sonoma & Napa counties. It's the Napa region closest to the San Francisco peninsula and the San Pablo Bay, which is instrumental in controlling the climate of the area. The winds from the San Pablo bay create a cool weather pattern ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Notable FactsBoth Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Carneros are delicate, yet complex, with firm structure and acidity. And while the pair are the most popular varieties of the region, some winemakers have branched out, particularly with Syrah. The cool climate Syrah of Carneros is well structured and stylistically similar to Syrah from the Northern Rhone, though often fuller-bodied.
About CaliforniaIt's not rare to see a wine's country of origin listed as "California." A country into itself in the wine world, California makes enough varieties and styles to match many European wine countries. It produces a diverse range of wines that span the quality spectrum.
