Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep, dark garnet in color, the bright nose exhibits plums, raspberry and blackberries. The rich yet not overripe flavors of red-vine licorice, anise, spicy strawberry, and red currants are full-bodied and true to the varietal. The Petite Sirah in the blend contributes black pepper spice, racy acidity and firm structure, and gives this wine a rustic personality. The moderate oak contributes subtle vanilla and a smoky nuance.

Critical Acclaim

"Petite Sirah from the Russian River Valley adds meatiness and brings out a dried sage scent in the fiery spice of this zin, which includes old-vine fruit from the Maple Vineyard and some cool-climate zin from Parmelee-Hill on the Sonoma Coast. It has the smokiness and sparky brightness of spruce boughs thrown onto a open fire, while red fruit retains its freshness in cooling contrast. An earthy, meaty zin to serve with grilled lamb."

The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the...

Zinfandel(ZIN-fahn-dell) American Grape Zinfandel the American - or Californian - grape. Although it's not from America (Croatia has been named its origin), it does seem quite at home in the vineyards of California. During Prohibition, many Zinfandel vines survived as the high-yielding grape was popular both for home winemaking and communion wine, which is...
