Winemaker Notes

This wine opens with aromas that are both lifted and deep: black currants and star anise, cracked allspice, licorice root, manuka honey and sassafras. There are brambly cane fruit notes reminiscent of blackberries and boysenberries along with exotic spice of cardamom and saffron; rose petals and toasted cherry pits. On the palate one finds vibrant forest strawberries, bing cherries, clove oil, walnut meat, and a savory umami character. Present also are notes of kirsch filled chocolates, maple sugar and an iron-like minerality. This is a regal and refined rendition of our Red Hills Estate. Tannins are plush and integrated and the very satisfying whole shows tremendous focus, intrigue and persistence.

    This has some density of color and flavor, with a strong minty note running through the currant and blackberry fruit, dancing lightly on the finish.

    The 2010 Pinot Noir Archery Summit Estate showcases the south-facing, 16 acre winery property and vines planted in 1994 and 1995, of which this limited bottling slightly favors a block of old-fashioned Pommard selection over the site’s predominant Dijon clones. At close to 60%, it received the largest share of new barrels found in any of this estate’s 2010s. Marzipan, vanilla, and maraschino lend a confectionary tone that begins already in the nose, but notes of rose hip, sachet, and black tea offer welcome counterpoint and complexity. A glycerol-slicked, polished palate compliments the richness of ripe cherry fruit and leads to a soothingly lingering finish. This ought to perform well for at least the better part of a decade, though it is one of those among current Archery Summit releases that would have much benefitted from some genuinely saliva-inducing savor.

They practice sustainability wherever possible, from responsible farming in the vineyard to energy-sensitive approaches in the cellar.

Many of the vineyard sites are LIVE (Low Input Viticulture & Enology) certified, meaning they adhere to an internationally-acclaimed set of sustainability standards. These guidelines are site-specific and look to strengthen the well-being of the vineyard through minimal spraying, careful clone selection, heightened biodiversity, and more. Archery Summit endeavors to ensure that the soils and biodiversity of each site are as healthy and vibrant as they were when they found them.
