Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Blackcurrant, cassis and violets are noticeable on the bouquet which takes time to unfurl and show its true nuanced beauty. The palate is generous and offers up more cassis, fruitcake and blackcurrants, tinged with deep mocha notes and a hint of violets. Refined and elegant with a layered, structured complexity. Powerful too, with a brooding, dark mid-palate. Beautifully poised, balanced and focused with lovely precision in use of oak, ripeness of fruit and overall cohesion. A soft, silky and seductive wine which lingers long.

The 2010 Anthonij Rupert Cabernet Sauvignon is a serious wine that competes well amongst heralded international players—Bordeaux, the Napa Valley and others. When I tasted the wine, that was where my palate immediately went. The wine's impressive blackcurrant notes are wrapped nicely in a sweet oak. Drinking well now (Tasted: August 11, 2016, San Francisco, CA)

Features mature edges but remains sufficiently deep, with a strong core of steeped plum, black currant and blackberry fruit that has melded nicely with the tobacco leaf, smoldering charcoal and singed juniper notes. The long finish lets the fruit and wood details mull together. Drink now through 2020.

Anthonij Rupert, South Africa
Anthonij Rupert Winery Image
The historic L’Ormarins wine farm was established not long afterwards in 1694. Until the early 19th century, most of the owners were from the French Hugeonot descent. The Rupert family purchased the estate in 1969, and continued the winemaking tradition.

In 2005, Johann Rupert assumed ownership of the family wine business and created the Anthonij Rupert winery, after his late brother. It was under the guidance of Johann that a complete overhaul of the estate was conducted, which resulted in one of the most state of the art wineries in South Africa.

The Anthonij Rupert Wines philosophy of matching variety to site, to produce the highest quality of fruit, with neither expense nor commitment spared to capture that quality in a bottle, guarantees a current portfolio of wines that are second to none. This philosophy was exemplified in the first Wine Spectator ratings, in which 3 of the 4 wines received 90+ratings.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Originally named Franschhoek meaning the “French Corner” because it was home to the influx of French Huguenots, today the valley contains many historic cellars and is an important tourist location because of its proximity to Cape Town.

This valley falls to the southeast of Paarl and is enclosed on three sides by towering mountains. Streams from the slopes flow down to the valley floor, converging to form the Berg River. The area excels in the production of full-bodied reds.
