Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.9%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Classic Conn Valley bouquet, cassis, cigar box, black pepper and crushed granite. Complex and dense. Full bodied, blackberries, sweet tannins, coffee, chewy and concentrated long finish, lingering aftertaste. Should age effortlessly 20-25 years.

Critical Acclaim

"As I indicated last year, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a brilliant effort. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, it has begun to shut down slightly, but reveals an opaque purple color along with deep, sweet, cedary, black currant aromas intermixed with hints of tobacco leaf, licorice and graphite. Full-bodied, powerful and rich, this impressive 2007 needs 4-5 years of cellaring and should keep for 25+ years."

Deep ruby hue; Blackberry, Cassis, Tobacco, & Licorice on the nose (very fragrant); Medium+ body; Well-balanced, nicely structured; Bold luscious fruit with bright acidity at the beginning that smoothes out; Not overly oaky. Long finish with noticeable, but well integrated tannins. Decanted for about 2 hours...got better with time. This lush, juicy wine has all the promise of a classic; full of potential, but needs at least a couple of years (maybe more) cellar time.

Dark purple color. Extraordinary aromas of mocha, violets, chocolate and cedar, with just the right amount of oak to balance. First sip is more fruit forward with juicy ripe blackberries, but quickly followed by coffee bean spice, chocolate covered cherries, and layers of concentrated dark fruit flavors. There are great fruit and oak tannins that give a definite sweetness. Once you swallow, you will keep enjoying this wine for another 2-3 minutes due to its long, lingering finish! Would definitely benefit from cellar time...maybe 2-3 years (or more).

Learn About Napa Valley

It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard...

Learn About Cabernet Sauvignon

(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
