The 2011 Renegade opens with extravagant aromas of black fruit, blueberry, vanilla bean and smoked bacon. Flavors of black cherry, black currant and wild raspberry cascade along a plush, mouthfilling texture along with trailing notes of cola, spice and toasty oak. Power yields to elegance on the finish, with clean structure and smooth tannins leading the way.

There has been a good deal of debate about the potential virtues and pitfalls of the cool and quite challenging 2011 vintage, but this unlikely, unconventional combination of grapes very much speaks to the former. It leads with a mix of bright berries and slightly pungent, peppery spice in the nose and follows with lively flavors that are filled with fresh fruit and long on stamina. While sporting plenty of zesty acidity, it does not want for fruity stuffing, and it shows the kind of balance to suggest that it will age with great grace. "

We are a family-owned winery specializing in estate-grown wines from Margarita Vineyard, the southernmost vineyard in the Paso Robles appellation on California’s Central Coast.
Just look at a map of Paso Robles wineries and at the very southern tip you will find our Vineyard. Here, amid the rugged Santa Lucia mountain range just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean, Margarita Vineyard stands alone as the only vineyard in its vicinity, and thus the only vineyard to benefit from the extraordinary growing conditions of the area. Margarita Vineyard resides in the historic Santa Margarita Ranch, which was first planted to vines by Franciscan missionaries in 1774.
Ancient Peaks and Margarita Vineyard are owned by three longtime local winegrowing families—the Filipponis, Rossis and Wittstroms—who are actively involved in the daily operations of the vineyard and winery. Ancient Peaks wines are crafted under the guidance of Mike Sinor, a local winemaking veteran and one of the highest-rated winemakers on the Central Coast.

The largest of California's wine growing regions, the Central Coast produces the majority of California's wine. The district sprawls out, covering most of the vineyard land between San Francisco and Santa Barbara. Smaller sub-AVAs of the Central Coast include Monterey Bay, Paso Robles, Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Maria Valley, Santa Cruz Mountains and many others.
Notable FactsGrape varieties range from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. Some Central Coast wine is generic, bulk wine that contributes to the high production numbers of the area. But many winemakers and wineries, particular in some of the smaller AVAs, are small production artisans, creating unique and high-quality wine. The great thing about the Central Coast is its diversity - you're able to find a number of grape varieties and styles at a number of different price points.

Down south, Santa Barbara's Santa Maria Valley is well-known for its Rhône blends, as well as cool-climate varieties like Pinot and Chardonnay. The Central Coast, the largest California AVA, has many different microclimates that lead to a wide range of wines with many sub-AVAs.

This is good. I'll definitely get this one again. It is a predominately (60%) syrah wine blended with petite verdot and a little merlot. I'm used to overwhelming cherry from syrah which frankly I don't care for. You don't get that at all from this wine. Cherry, if it is there, comes late and really just a hint. This comes across immediately as very complex with strong wood/oak overtones. This wine stands on its own or pared against the strongest foods.
